Charles Hutchings completed his musical studies as a mature student, gaining diplomas on the trumpet, and high level grades on most of the brass instruments.

His career has consisted of performing and teaching in variable proportions, and in recent years he has been the principal brass teacher at Kimbolton School, where he directs the brass ensembles and CCF band.

Charles' playing career has included a breadth of musical styles and trumpets; as well as the 'D' trumpet he is performing on tonight he plays everything from the piccolo trumpet to the more common 'Bb' and flugelhorn. Much of the repertoire he covers elsewhere is for big bands and function bands, and he is regularly called on to play the lead part in shows such as West Side Story and 42nd Street.

Charles grew up in Bedfordshire and as a child performed in the Bedford Messiah choir several times. He is delighted to be returning to this ensemble this evening.
